Meyim spinosa Roxb., a medicinai plant enjoys it itse in the traditional medicine in Bangladesh for the treatment of a number of ailnıents. The present stıtdy was undertaken to investigate the antibaeterial and cvtotoxic activitv of the ethanol extract of Mevna spinosa stem. Antibaeterial activity was investigated against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pvogenes, Escherichia coli and Shigella dysenteriae by disc diffıtsion and broth maerodilution assay. İn disk diffusion assav, the extract inhibited ali the microorganisms except E. coli. Minimum inhibitorv concentration (MIC§ of the extract w as 1000 ptg/ml for S. aureus, S. pvogenes and E. coli, whereas 500 jug/mL for S. dysenteriae. For cytotoxicity test, the extract w as subjected to brine shrimp lethality bioassav. The LD50 of M. spinosa stem extract was found to be 40 pg/mL. Findings of the stıtdy jııstify the itse of the plant in traditional medicine and suggests for further investigation.
