Two simple, sensitive, rapid, robust and reproducible spectrophotometric methods were developed for the determination of p-phenylenediamine (PPD) in hair dyes. The analysis of PPD was performed using alkaline solution of Folin’s reagent and ninhydrin reagent in methanol at 453nm and 431nm respectively. The methods were linear in the concentration range from 2-12 μg/mL for Folin’s reagent and 0.1-0.6 μg/mL for ninhydrin reagent. The methods were validated with respect to system suitability, linearity, precision, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), accuracy (recovery), ruggedness, and robustness. The developed methods can be used for routine analysis of p-phenylenediamine in marketed products. The methods were validated in accordance with the current ICH guidelines. The precision results, expressed by intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviation values, are satisfactory (RSD<2.00%).
